Elizabeth & James and a dose of new year’s humility…

Friday, January 1st, 2010

Today I fell madly in love with an Elizabeth & James blazer at Neiman Marcus, but alas, my cruel husband (‘ll refer to him herewith as the “Joy Thwarter”) guilted me into not buying it. As I sulked my way home, the Joy Thwarter reminded me I had a lot to be grateful for and that the exquisite blazer was just “a piece of fabric.”

After much pondering, I realized that the Joy Thwarter was right. I am going to share with you the lovely poem that set me back on track and which is my inspiration for the new year.   Happy Twenty-Ten!

“To realize the value of 10 years, ask a newly divorced couple. To realize the value of four years, ask a graduate. To realize the value of one year, ask a student who has failed a final exam. To realize the value of nine months, ask a mother who gave birth to a stillborn. To realize the value of one month, ask a mother who has given birth to a premature baby. To realize the value of one week, ask an editor of a weekly newspaper. To realize the value of one hour, ask the lovers who are waiting to meet. To realize the value of one minute, ask the person who has just missed the train, bus or plane. To realize the value of one second, ask a person who has survived an accident. To realize the value of a millisecond, ask the person who has won the silver medal in the Olympics. Time waits for no one. Treasure every moment you have.”
