Toronto Fashion Week….concluded!

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

Toronto Fashion Week… always a ton of fun, with a few pleasant and at times disappointing surprises!!! But, hey…it wouldn’t be fashion if it did not have surprises in store for us.

As I’ve previously mentioned, there was a lot of controversy surrounding the choice of venue. Allstream Center is a beautiful building with a very modern appeal and is  ideal for a large reception. However, for this specific occasion, I felt that the entire venue lacked character. The interior decor of the main room was great and the runway was much larger, however  the entire venue just felt off!!! I very much prefer last season’s location, which was so beautifully done and had so much more  appeal. Unfortunately, this venue just felt very generic!!!  Despite the fact that the venue was not very interesting, I do feel that the critique it received is too harsh. Beautiful structure, and a great event…but each is better off without the other!

Despite the negative attention, the collections that were shown were very beautiful and original. The point of the fashion week is to celebrate Canadian talent and this season around the designers really did deliver great amount of eye candy! Here are some of my favorite shows of this season!

My top three shows from Toronto Fashion Week:

Pink Tartan was hands down my favorite. I adore the combination of feminine and edgy, definitely a perfect mix!

Toronto Fashion Week…the power of style

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

LG Fashion Week

After a few hiccups on the date and location, Toronto Fashion Week is underway at the Allstream Center. The Fall collections, unveiled this week (March 28th -April 1st) will showcase this season’s theme, The Power of Style.

” The Power of Style is the result of  decade long  demand meeting fulfillment,” says Robin Kay, President of  the FDCC. ” The demand for our own Canadian fashion identity has been met by the fulfillment from the designers,  sponsors, and community. How else could it be a better truth than  with this  descriptive energy, The Power of Style.”

With the excitement, came the disappointment surrounding the venue. This season, Toronto Fashion Week is hosted at an award winning Allstream Center, which is recognized for its distinctive design and features modern technology  and the most advanced innovations in green  and environmental building. Despite the impressive features of the location, there has been a lot of controversy surrounding the choice.  The venue was changed numerous times and finally decided on just 18 days before the opening ceremonies.

Norwayne Anderson, owner of NAM modelling agency which supplies models for Toronto fashion week, said he found out about the change of venue from designers. “It’s so disheartening,” he said. “It’s disrespectful. The fashion industry in this city needs stability. Our voice is always lost in the confusion.”

Despite the controversy, the show much go on! Although I cannot comment on the choice myself at this moment; I will be back with a more reviews of shows and the venue on Saturday after attending the fashion week :)

Stay tuned ….this week is all about Canadian fashion and our talented designers! You can watch live show streaming HERE!!!

Until the next post…toodles!!!

For the Guest…survive with charm and style!!!!

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

With Christmas Eve slowly passing by and New Year’s just around the corner…your fabulous self will be attending countless holiday parties. However, it is important to keep in mind that a wonderful party is half the work of the hostess and the other half is up to the guest ( you!)  In order to be a fabulous guest you “need to understand the unstated rules of behavior. A little attention to such things as table manners and party-guest decorum might seem old-fashioned, but when you know how to eat your soup and oysters without ruining your clothing, when you can elegantly negotiate demanding dinner-party conversation, it will pay off times over.”

How to be a perfect guest:

  • RSVP immediately.
  • Always greet the hostess and thank her for the invitation.
  • Offer to help out the hostess.
  • Do not get too flirty.
  • Do not smoke inside.
  • Try not to be the first or last to leave the party.
  • Send a thank you  note or e-mail after the event. It is a very cute way to say thank you!
  • Bring a gift with you. How about giving some lovely soap or hand cream in beautiful packaging ( check out our Mor cosmetic line for ideas) or maybe a plant in a pot, macaroons or a must-read book.

  • If you spilled a drink or broke something, offer to pay for the cleaning or mending.
  • If you forgot someone’s name, apologize immediately but not dramatically.
  • Wait until everyone is seated before starting to eat.
  • Rest you fork and knife between bites so you do not rush your food.
  • Try not to leave food on your plate, as this could offend you hostess.
  • For more tips and tricks check out : Tiffany’s Table Manners for Teenagers by Walther Hoving ( available at Liv for $22); Occasions and Manners by Kate Spade ( available at Liv for $30).

IMG_5214-1How to be the most stylish guest:

  • Black tie: “You are to become a butterfly.Wear bold colors, wear fabulous jewelry, wear anything that helps you make a statement and an entrance.”
  • Cocktail attire: ” This means a short dress.Pull out that fabulous short dress, your killer high heels, your funkier jewelry. Big cocktail rings are made for this dress code.
  • Dressy Casual: ” This means pants are okay but no jeans. Fun tops are great, but don’t do a T-shirt.
  • Casual: “It means anything goes. But not for you. Someone is extending an invitation to you, to make the effort. Have fun with it.”
  • For more tips and tricks check out: The Little Black Book of Style by Nina Garcia (available at Liv for $25.99);  Style by Kate Spade (available at Liv for $30); The Lucky Guide to Mastering Any Style by Kim France and Andrea Linett ( available at Liv$33).

LIV’s birthday bash a smashing success!

Saturday, June 6th, 2009

First, my apologies for not having posted in…can’t even remember how long. My excuse is being seven and a half months pregnant and perpetually exhausted at night. We’ve also been crazy busy preparing for our big birthday event, which happened today.
The weather was glorious, the vibe even better, and we had tons of people all day! The change rooms were still full at 6pm. It was so exciting to feel that momentum, especially after all our hard work transforming the store.
Kudos to Julie, my right hand girl, who worked her butt off through the excruciating pain of having her wisdom teeth out only last week. With a mouth full of cloves and cotton balls, she put her heart into the entire event, sometimes crying through the pain! I am so blessed to have her, and all my fantastic staff. What a team…
So here is a look at some of the new summer merchandising at LIV and some snippets from the day:
