Our Monogrammed Sheets featured on Cupcakes & Cashmere

Friday, May 6th, 2011

Thanks to Emily of Cupcakesandcashmere.com for featuring us on her blog today! She mentioned her new beautiful scalloped & monogrammed Au Lit sheets in her Five Things post…

We can monogram anything – your initials, your full name or even a cute slogan (I LOVE MOM!) We offer a HUGE range of colours. Monogramming starts at $25.00 for the first 3 letters and $6 for every additional letter. (Custom designs are priced on an individual basis.)

As for the sheets, (the most important part) all of our linens are woven in Italy and sewn in Canada. We have lots of different thread-counts to choose from. (If you’ve never slept in Egyptian cotton/Italian-woven sheets, you will experience an incredible difference. It’s worth the investment, trust me!)

Introducing our new Au Lit pillow!

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

We take customer feedback very seriously and are constantly striving to improve our products and services.

Recently we noticed that our Au Lit pillow wasn’t getting the positive reaction we’ve come to expect, so we decided to try it out for ourselves.  Our customers were right: we found it to be slightly too firm. Although everyone liked the price of the Au Lit pillow ($120 Standard), they were willing to pay more for that perfect fit. As you know, good value is really important to us, so we wanted to continue to offer a reasonably priced, 100% goose down pillow that our customers would adore.

Over the past few months, we’ve been working with our down manufacturer to find a solution. We started experimenting by adjusting the amounts of down in each pillow and trying different shells with different thread-counts. After multiple samples and several restless nights of testing, we finally achieved success! Decreasing the amount of down by a couple of ounces for a softer loft and upgrading the thread-count on the shell has completely transformed this pillow. The Au Lit pillow is now new and improved,  providing a perfect mix of soft to medium support and best of all, at exactly the same price!

The feedback has been fantastic so far and it’s become my new favourite pillow to recommend to all my friends and family. It’s perfectly squishy, but still supportive.

Considering the quality of this pillow, you will have a hard time finding better value elsewhere. If you see down pillows at a box store or discount store at a so called “bargain prices” you can bet it’s not the real thing. With down products, as with anything that is an investment, you get what you pay for.

Our new favourite K. Hall scent: Shore Line

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Customers and staff alike, have always loved the K. Hall products we carry. They continue to create fine fragrances for the home, bath, and body. Last year they introduced “Washed Linen” which we adored, and this season they’ve come out with another incredible scent called “Shore-Line”. We’re SO crazy about it, we had to share it with you!

Shore-Line is a tranquil fragrance with notes of ozone, summer blossoms, and beach breezes which are known to leave one feeling calm and refreshed. Soft and fresh, this is sure to become a new favourite! Available in scented candles, soaps, hand & body cream.

Also in time for spring, other new scents have arrived like Egyptian Jasmine and Pomegranate, as well as our classic scents like Washed Cotton, Lavender and Milk.

How to choose a duvet?

Friday, April 15th, 2011

Did you know that sleeping under a duvet is like sleeping in a cloud? Gone are the days of stiff polyester comforters, spending money on the ‘top-of-bed’ and skimping on what’s underneath. At Au Lit, we’ve been educating clients for almost three decades about the benefits and delights of investing in quality fillers as well as quality linens. A good night’s sleep begins with the pillow and duvet. Once you sleep with a good quality duvet, you will never, ever go back. Why? Because down adapts to your body’s temperature so it keeps you warm in the winter without being too hot in the summer. With that as your launching point, let’s talk about duvets.

The quality of your duvet matters a lot. There is virtually nothing that will serve you for so many hours in a day, every week and every month, for decades. We spend a third of our lives in bed and we should enjoy that time. A cheap, inferior quality duvet will last only a few years, and will not be the wonderful experience it should be. In that regard, they are not just inexpensive, they’re poor value.

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN PURCHASING A DUVET:

1- Make sure it’s 100% down, preferably Canadian or European. Quality down should keep you warm but the duvet itself should feel light on your body.

2- The quality of down is measured in Loft (Fill Power). A lofting power of 400–450 is considered medium quality, 500-550 is considered good, 550–750 is considered very good, and 750+ is considered excellent. This doesn’t mean you can only buy 750+ and up, but now you can understand the difference and make a personal decision.

3- The thread-count of the shell does affect how the entire duvet will feel. You want to make sure that the thread-count is above 300. This allows for the down to move beautifully and does not “crunch” as some lower thread-count shells do.

4- We recommend a baffle-box construction so the down doesn’t clump at the bottom and remains evenly spread out.

The truth of the matter is, you do get what you pay for. If someone tried to sell you a mink coat for $99.99, you would know that it’s fake. The same is true when it comes to down products, so don’t be fooled. Make sure you trust the company you’re purchasing from and that they provide you with all of the information we’ve listed above.

At Au Lit Fine Linens, we’re all about good value. Our mission is to change the way you sleep. We want you to have a duvet that you’ll adore and that will last for years. If you’re looking to improve your bed, our Pillow & Duvet Sale is son until the end of the month – 25% OFF ALL DOWN AND RELATED PRODUCTS. You can also check out our products here.

TIP: Keep in mind, the duvet cover you choose will also affect the way your duvet feels. If you choose a heavy weight fabric for your duvet cover, it will put weight on your duvet and you’ll loose a bit of that “sleeping in a cloud” feeling.

Re-thinking your art

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

It is common for people to think that frames on a wall together need to be the same style and colour, but that isn’t always the case. One of my favourite looks is a variety of different sized frames and styles mixed with interesting art. It adds great visual interest, and makes the images in the frames seem more special and unique. It’s also a great way to re-use frames you already have. These are some great examples:

That’s not to say that groupings of the same style dont look great as well…

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

We understand that not everyone wants to invest in high-end bedding for the kids, the cottage or their guest rooms, yet we do believe that everyone still wants quality combined with beautiful design. Over the course of the year, we will introduce another 12 designs, including classical Toiles and printed damasks, contemporary designs, and more youthful floral prints in a wide variety of colours. We are confident that we have created enough variety to suit all bedrooms, from the kids’ to the master.

I adore the minimalism of this room. It’s so relaxing, I want to crawl into the bed and spend an afternoon reading in it.
